Here is how the Walltham Family School supports families and the community:

-More than 150 people from 48 families benefit from the Family Literacy programming at the Waltham Family School. Adults receive ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, parenting education, interactive family literacy, home visits, and life skills training. And are prepared to support their children in school and become active members of the workforce and the community.

-90% of Waltham Family School children perform at or above grade level in Waltham Public Schools by the time they reach 2nd grade.

-"A mother's reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children's future academic success, outweighing other factors, such as neighborhood and family income." (Demography, National Institute of Health, October 2010)

A message from executive director beth toolan:

Fall is here, falling leaves, and, of
course, WPY's annual spelling bee. This year, the Bee will be held on Thursday, Nov. 1st. November 1is also National Family Literacy Day, a day to celebrate family literacy programs like the
Waltham Family School. I encourage
each of you to read with your children every day. Share  stories from your
own childhood, visit the library, or look at family photos. We invite you and
your family to celebrate National Family Literacy Day together!
